A 32bit XP key can only activate the copy of XP32 that it is tied to. And remember Windows 8 upgrade requires that a qualifying operating system XP SP3, Vista, Windows 7 must be installed at the time of the upgrade and is activated with the key you were sent by email at the time of your purchase.

No it is not. Upgrade means just that a previous windows operating system is needed. Boot to the Windows XP desktop don't bother activating Windows XP, you just need to have a qualifying license installed.
I'm afraid that you all may be mistaken. I went ahead and reinstalled XP and activated it. All of this together makes it clear that this does not apply to me. I want to go from XP 32 bit to Windows 8 64 bit. Only custom installation is left for an installation choice. Doing this installs Windows 8 64 bit but does not keep my XP activation formats the drive.

I've gone around in circles asking from various sources and have been given lots of misinformation. No you do not have to have the base XP 32 bit installed if you're going to Windows 8 64 bit.
Upgrade Assistant doesn't do anything but check your system compatibility and offer to sell you things. Is there anyone here that knows what I need to do? Do I need to use the automated activation phone number or talk to a live service rep? Obviously no one here has upgraded from 32 bit XP to 64 bit Windows 8.

System Builder is quite a bit more than you paid. The upgrade version is exactly the same as the full version except you don't receive an activation key it comes with a cd key though so you can do a fresh installation.
You use the activation key from your pervious OS while inside Windows. Windows 8 is installed and works perfectly I'm just wanting to activate it with my XP cd key as various sites state you can. That same site answers questions about the system builder versions just under the part I was quoting.
